Question:

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT WORDS ARE PROFANITY TO GOD........I GO
TO CHURCH WITH SOME THAT THINK THE SMALL WORDS ARE OK TO SAY.........I
KNOW THEY ARE WRONG BUT DON'T KNOW WHERE TO GO TO IN THE BIBLE
TO SHOW THEM WHEN THEY SAY THIS TO ME.........THANKS AND GOD BLESS

I would like to thank you for your confidence in us to ask a Bible question.

The first thing we need to consider is the definition of the word “profanity”: 1. The condition or quality of being profane. 2a. Abusive, vulgar, or irreverent language. b. The use of such language. American Heritage Dictionary Online
Profanity: 1. The state of being profane.  2. Profane speech or action.
Profane v.t. 1. To treat (something sacred) with irreverence or abuse; desecrate; pollute… adj. 1. Manifesting irreverence, disrespect, or undue familiarity toward the Deity or sacred things; blasphemous. The Reader’s Digest Great Encyclopedic Dictionary 1975 ed.

While the Bible does not list specific words that are profane, with a little thought, one can determine if a word treats something sacred with irreverence, disrespect, or undue familiarity.  We must never use words like “God”, “Lord”, “Christ”, etc. in such a manner.  An example would be the expression, “Lordy, Lordy, look who just turned forty.”  Also, how one treats the words like “God”, “Lord”, “Christ”, etc. reveals their attitude towards God and Christ.

In Matthew 12:36-37, we see why we need to be careful of what we say.  “36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” NKJV

A couple other passages that emphasize that Christians should not use filthy language are:
Colossians 3:8 “But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.” NKJV
Ephesians 4:29 - Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. NKJV  (The word “corrupt” is defined as “sapros -- 1) rotten, putrefied  2) corrupted by one and no longer fit for use, to be worn out  3) of poor quality, bad, unfit for use, worthless (from The Online Bible Thayer's Greek Lexicon and Brown Driver & Briggs Hebrew Lexicon, Copyright (c)1993, Woodside Bible Fellowship, Ontario, Canada. sapros
NT:4550, "corrupt, rotten" (akin to sepo, "to rot"), primarily, of vegetable and animal substances, expresses what is of poor quality, unfit for use, putrid. It is said of a tree and its fruit, Matt 7:17-18; 12:33; Luke 6:43; of certain fish, Matt 13:48 (here translated "bad"); of defiling speech, Eph 4:29.  (from Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words, Copyright (c)1985, Thomas Nelson Publishers
